You’re never too old to learn something new

Cristina Doan

Where are you from? Why did you choose to attend FSU?

I’m from Tallahassee, but grew up in Thomasville, GA. I always wanted to attend FSU and couldn’t for my undergraduate degree, but the opportunity presented itself when I started working for FSU with the Housing department.

What inspired you to choose your degree program?

I chose my degree program to help me further my career in government marketing since that’s what I’m already doing in my current position, but by growing my knowledge and expertise I open myself to advancing in my career.

What has your experience been so far in the program?

It’s been a very positive experience. I’ve enjoyed the instructors I’ve worked with and find that the knowledge being provided is relevant and interesting to learn.

What aspect of your area of study do you find most fascinating?

I find human behavior to be incredibly fascinating. Why we do what we do especially as consumers and what kind of messaging and marketing really draws you in and tells a story.

Who are the faculty or staff members that have helped or inspired you?

Dr. Parker and Dr. Lawrence have both been very helpful so far in my journey. They listen to my questions and concerns and offer knowledgeable and insightful feedback.

What do you like to do when you’re not doing schoolwork?

Outside of working a normal full-time job, when I’m not doing schoolwork I enjoy spending time with the people close to me, knitting, reading a good book and catching up on my current two favorite shows Outlander and the Real Housewives of Orange County.

After you graduate, what are your plans?

My hope is to advance in my career into a higher management role within the same field I’m already in.

What advice do you have for fellow students?

My biggest piece of advice is to never stop learning. I waited seven years to go back to school and was nervous that I had waited too long. It’s important for us to continue learning everyday whether in college or on our own. You’re never too old to learn something new.
