Student Spotlight: Luke Carraway

Where are you from? Why did you choose to attend FSU?
I grew up in San Antonio, Texas.  I chose to attend FSU because of the fantastic reputation that the nurse anesthesia program has and because of the way that I was treated by the faculty and staff during the interview process.  I had never met a nicer, more welcoming group of people, something that holds true today!

What inspired you to choose your degree program?
There were several reasons. Firstly, I wanted my life to make a difference and have an impact in the lives of others. Second, I wanted a challenging career that would always have room for professional growth. Lastly, I wanted to attain the highest level of autonomy and expertise within the field of nursing.  Becoming a Nurse Anesthetist accomplishes all of these.  In the United States, CRNAs provide the majority of anesthetics that allow patients to safely and comfortably go through surgery. We practice independently in virtually every setting, are usually the sole anesthesia provider in all combat environments in the military and are a key component in increasing access to surgical care in rural areas.  It is an extraordinary career field and I could not be more excited to be a part of it.

What has your experience been so far in the program?
My experience in this program has been incredible.  The faculty go above and beyond to impart the necessary information to us to prepare us for our clinical experiences.  They genuinely care about the students, work collaboratively with us to ensure we are learning what we need, and do their best to provide varied and comprehensive clinical experiences for our class. Furthermore, I have never been in an environment where the faculty and classmates care so much for each other.   The Florida State CRNA program is a special place.

What aspect of your area of study do you find most fascinating?
Pharmacology.  It is extraordinary to see how drugs work at a cellular level.

Who are the faculty or staff members that have helped or inspired you
They have all had their unique contributions to me as a professional.  Dr. VanDyke has been an extraordinary example on how to treat people and how to create an organization that is all about the welfare of its people. Dr. Hodges has created wonderful clinical opportunities that will make me a strong provider when I graduate.  Dr. Hogan has been a wonderful example of humility, even though he is a bona fide expert in multiple areas of anesthesia.  Finally, Dr. Stewart is probably the best teacher I have ever had in any subject.  This program has incredible faculty who do their best to help and mentor the students.

What do you like to do when you’re not doing school work?
I love to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, work out, and spend time with my wife and four kids.

After you graduate, what are your plans?
Not sure!

What advice do you have for fellow students?
Make friends with people that care enough for you that they’ll hold you accountable and challenge you to become better.
