Leadership and management is the bedrock of OMC

Cristina Doan

Where are you from? Why did you choose to attend FSU?

As a military dependent and active duty service member, I am “from” so many places. Having served at Tyndall Air Force Base and now employed in Jacksonville, I have lived in Florida the longest I have in any other state and like to call it home.

During all my time in Florida, I always wondered where I would earn my graduate degree. In 2022, I finally started vetting different programs to benefit my career and life goals. I wanted to attend a graduate program that would challenge me intellectually and surround me with faculty and fellow graduate students who would further enrich my perspective on life.

What inspired you to choose your degree program?

I wanted to enhance my professional development—leadership and management are the bedrock of Organizational Management and Communication graduate program!

What has your experience been so far in the program?

Spring 2023 was my first semester. Earning a master’s degree while leading a full-time career can be challenging. Everyone says that balance is essential, but you must have clearly established priorities to ensure balance. Priorities feed successful progression toward your goals. And in a pinch, they will show you where to invest your time.

What aspect of your area of study do you find most fascinating?

I am a philomath. I love learning and studying. All my areas of study are genuinely fascinating. Although detailed exploring of rabbit holes is familiar to me (haha), I should pack a lunch when conducting research around behavior analysis.

Who are the faculty or staff members that have helped or inspired you?

I enjoyed classes with Dr. Lawrence, Dr. Sleiman, and Dr. Reed for my first semester. Their wealth of knowledge and passion in their areas of expertise is inspiring.

What do you like to do when you’re not doing school work?

Researching history. Writing. Making forever memories with family and friends.

After you graduate, what are your plans?

I plan to take a mini vacation – location is TBD. But I am enjoying my research.

What advice do you have for fellow students?

Be open to changes and new experiences! My only regrets are the opportunities I didn’t take!
