Student Spotlight – Abigail Gomez
Can you tell us a bit about where you're from and what influenced your decision to apply to the Corporate and Public Communication program at FSU Panama City?
I’m a South Florida native based in Palm Beach, and a proud first-generation American with roots in both Colombia and the Dominican Republic. I completed my undergraduate studies at FSU, where I earned degrees in Philosophy and Political Science. After graduating, I started working in corporate marketing and quickly realized it was the space I wanted to grow in. The Corporate and Public Communication program felt like the perfect fit because it connects so well to what I do every day, and I’ve been able to apply what I’m learning in real time.

Which faculty or staff members at FSU Panama City have significantly impacted or inspired you during your time in the Corporate and Public Communication program?
Dr. Parker has been an incredible mentor throughout my time in the program. He’s supported my work from the beginning and has always made me feel like he truly saw my potential, which helped build my confidence in what I was producing. My career is a bit niche, centered around alternative wellness, and he never treated that as a limitation. Instead, he encouraged me to lean into it and use my unique perspective to create meaningful work and explore communication in ways that felt both personal and impactful.
I’m also extremely grateful to Cristina Doan for her constant support and guidance over the last few years. She’s been incredibly reliable and such a pleasure to communicate with throughout the program. Her encouragement behind the scenes made a big difference in helping me stay on track and feel connected, even from a distance.
In what ways has the Corporate and Public Communication program supported your current career and how do you envision it helping you achieve your future career goals in this field?
The program has strengthened my marketing strategy skills and helped me become more intentional in how I approach planning and communication. I’ve learned how to break down complex goals into organized, actionable steps, and how to develop strategic communication that aligns with both brand voice and audience needs. These skills have directly supported my current role, and I know they’ll continue to play a big part as I grow in the field, especially as I aim to take on executive leadership roles and look to influence broader messaging strategies within my industry.
What advice or encouragement would you offer to prospective students considering applying to the Corporate and Public Communication program?
This program is a great fit for working professionals who are looking to advance their careers while balancing other responsibilities. The flexible learning style makes it manageable, and the coursework is directly applicable to real-world communication roles. My biggest advice is to really lean on your professors and advisors, as they are incredibly supportive and truly want to see you succeed.
