Holly Durrance Corporate and Public Communication graduate student
I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but I’ve called Panama City, Florida home since 1996. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Communication from Florida State University Panama City in 2005 and have continued to live and work in the area ever since. Pursuing a graduate degree has always been a goal of mine, but like many, I placed those plans on hold to focus on work and family. When the time felt right to take that next step, I knew FSU Panama City was the best place to do it. I value the opportunity to engage in face-to-face learning, build meaningful connections with my professors, and benefit from the accessibility and support of a close-knit academic environment
Which faculty or staff members at FSU Panama City have significantly impacted or inspired you during your time in the Corporate and Public Communication graduate program?
All of my professors have been exceptional, but two in particular have made a lasting impact. Dr. Parker stands out as a knowledgeable professional with extensive real-world experience. His genuine passion for teaching and commitment to sharing his expertise have deeply influenced my learning experience. I also appreciate Dr. Lawrence’s infectious enthusiasm for growth and discovery, her energy and encouragement make every class engaging and inspiring.
In what ways has the Corporate and Public Communication graduate program supported your current career, and how do you envision it helping you achieve your future career goals in this field?
I currently work as a communications professional in the healthcare industry, and the Corporate and Public Communication graduate program has significantly deepened my understanding of both internal and external communications. It has reinforced the importance of choosing the right channels to deliver messages effectively and strategically. Most importantly, the program has allowed me to enhance my skill set and position myself to pursue higher-level opportunities within my organization.
What advice or encouragement would you offer to prospective students considering applying to the Corporate and Public Communication graduate program?
The best advice I’ve received is that time will pass no matter what. Choosing to invest that time in learning new skills and furthering your education means you can be in a stronger, more prepared place a year from now. Since the time will pass either way, why not use it to accomplish something you’ll be proud of?
