Can you tell us a bit about where you're from and what influenced your decision to complete the Underwater Crime Scene Certificate program at FSU Panama City?

I’m from Marianna, Florida, and my journey toward completing the Underwater Crime Scene Investigation (UCSI) Certificate program at FSU Panama City was significantly influenced by my experiences and relationships in my community. Dr. Irvin Clark, who served as my pastor at Greenwood United Methodist Church for many years, was pivotal in this decision. He frequently encouraged me to think about my future after Chipola College, always asking me about my next steps. During one of our conversations, I shared my passion for the water and my desire to explore career paths that combined that interest with my academic pursuits.

Dr. Clark recommended the UCSI program, highlighting its unique opportunities and the potential for impactful work. Intrigued, I visited the campus and toured the dive locker, where I met the dedicated staff and learned more about the program's focus on underwater investigations. I knew I had found my place when I stepped into the dive locker and absorbed the vibrant atmosphere. It was an instant connection, and I felt confident that transferring to FSU Panama City was my right decision. The combination of my love for water, the program's offerings, and the supportive community made it easy to pursue this path.

Which faculty or staff members at FSU Panama City have significantly impacted or inspired you during your time in the Underwater Crime Scene Certificate program?

During my time in the Underwater Crime Scene Certificate program at FSU Panama City, two faculty members—Adam Wendt and Mark Feulner—significantly impacted my journey. Their unwavering support and mentorship have been instrumental in my development as a diver. They provided countless opportunities to strengthen my dive skills and encouraged me to push beyond my limits.

After completing the program, Adam and Mark motivated me to pursue my Divemaster certification, believing in my potential every step. They also helped me secure a work-study position at the dive locker, where I’ve been able to assist with various tasks and further refine my Divemaster skills. Their belief in me and their commitment to my growth has made a lasting impression, and I truly appreciate how they recognized my hard work and dedication to the dive program. Their guidance has bolstered my technical abilities and instilled a deep confidence in my potential for success in this field.

In what ways has the Underwater Crime Scene Certificate program supported your current work in the dive locker, and how do you envision it helping you achieve your future career goals in this field?

The Underwater Crime Scene Certificate program has been invaluable in supporting my work in the dive locker. It has advanced my diving skills and provided a solid foundation of knowledge that I apply daily. Through hands-on experience and collaboration with knowledgeable staff, I’ve deepened my understanding of underwater investigations and improved my technical abilities.

This program has also instilled in me the importance of continuous education and professional development, motivating me to stay informed about the latest techniques and technologies in the field. As I assist in the dive locker, I gain practical insights directly applicable to my future career aspirations.

Looking ahead, I envision the skills and experiences I've gained through the program aiding me in pursuing a position on a dive team within a law enforcement agency. Alternatively, I may take my diving further by joining the military, where I can apply my investigation skills and contribute to critical operations. The knowledge and confidence I’ve developed in the program are crucial as I work toward these future career goals.
